Survey vs. Action

Taking employee surveys without sufficient follow-up makes employees cynical and less inspired.  If you're doing a survey, you have to realize that employees will expect something to come of it.

Key Interview Question

Asking the question "Why did you leave your last job?" can be one of the most insightful questions you ask during the interview.  Don't accept vague answers like "My boss and I didn't get along."  Find out why, and don't give up until you have a clear picture of what actually happened.  The reason they left their last job could be the very same reason they leave you if you hire them.  So find out now and avoid a repeat.

Straight Talk

The next time your with your employees, either in a meeting or one-on-one, ask this question, "What are we doing smart, and what are we doing dumb?"  Your goal is to focus on the important things  and get rid of the unimportant.  What are the dumbest things you're doing?  You have to stop doing those things.  Great organizations are able to edit.  One last thing, saying "What else?" is a great leadership habit to develop.

Talk vs. Survey

Surveys are fine, but simply having actual conversations and asking employees "What can we do better?" is much more valuable.  If employees can't sit down with their boss and talk about things, it doesn't matter how many anonymous surveys you conduct; you have a problem.
