Hold regular one-on-one interviews with current high-performing employees to learn what keeps them working in your organization and what could be changed to keep them from straying.
Think for a moment of the employees who have voluntarily quit your organization in the last year. How was their behavior different in the months prior to quitting that might have told you they were on their way out?
On average, Millennials last only two years at a job. Additionally, while Millennials are technologically savvy, they lack the soft skills, such as communication, listening, patience, leadership, and relationship building, that research shows creates effective leaders. Employees who begin to withdraw from workplace interactions are most likely to be looking for a new job. They offer fewer constructive contributions in meetings, they become more reserved and quiet, they suggest fewer new ideas, and they are less interested in participating in training and development programs.
You can learn a lot about a job candidate during the interview process by the questions they ask and don't ask. So let the candidate ask. Also, make sure there are a few awkward moments of silence. You usually hear the best stuff in those moments.
